More than 20 laws with provisions relating to womenshealth were enacted between 1983 and 1998 and a number of federally supportedwomens health programs have been created and/or expanded. This report, which maybe updated, summarizes the major womens health provisions of selected legislationenacted from 1983 through 1998 that relate to womens health. The laws highlighteddo not include appropriations acts.IntroductionImproving womens health was presented in 1997 as a top priority of the Departmentof Health and Human Services (HHS).1 HHS affirmed its commitment to acomprehensive, science-based approach to help address “longstanding inequities inwomens health.” Many of the actions identified by HHS to demonstrate the departmentscommitment
