On January 18, 2001, the U.S. Department of Agriculture proposedmandatory nutrition labeling rules for both major cuts and raw/ground fresh meat andpoultry products. This proposal is intended to provide consumers with more informationon the fat content of the products that they are selecting in the marketplace. This reportprovides background information and a brief history of the labeling issue, particularlywith regard to fresh meats, and will be updated when the new rules are final.BackgroundFollowing the recommendations of the 1969 White House Conference on Food,Nutrition and Health, the federal government embarked on the initial nutrition labelingprogram, in part to address concerns about hunger in America and promote consumptionof adequate amounts of
