Of this estimated population, about three-fifths entered surreptitiously (called EWIs, for entered without inspection), and abouttwo-fifths overstayed nonimmigrant visas (e.g., tourist visas). Employment appears tobe the primary magnet, but there also are other motives for illegal residency.
