Peterson and April GradyDomestic Social Policy DivisionSummaryBased on data from the Census Bureaus Current Population Survey (CPS), 8.9million children under age 19 were uninsured in 2007 (11.3%), a statistically significantdecline compared to 9.4 million in 2006 (12.1%). This decline occurred because of asignificant increase in public coverage, from 26.8% in 2006 to 27.9% in 2007. Thepercentage of children with employment-based health insurance (61%) was unchanged.Only 7.5% of non-Hispanic white children were uninsured in 2007, compared with20.7% of Hispanic children. Compared to 2006, black and Hispanic childrenexperienced significant increases in 2007 in rates of public coverage, resulting in a dropin their uninsurance rates.
